Art, whether you are creating it or viewing others’ creations, offers you delight and a chance to explore emotions, enhance confidence, and work on yourself. But how can art improve our mental health and can be used in therapy?
Saying It with Art
Art therapy is an integrated way that enriches the life of the individual through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience. It focuses on improving cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress.
How does it work?
An art therapist may use various art techniques including drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, craft etc. with clients ranging from children to adults. The clients are encouraged to use any medium of art with which they can express their inner world.
People do not need any kind of artistic ability for art therapy. There is no pressure for creating. It integrates the process of art with an expression of untold emotions, pain and trauma and builds independence and individuation.
